West Hollywood turned up the pink, purple, and blue in September as the City celebrated Bi+ Visibility Week with flags, lights, storytelling, music, and plenty of good cheer.
Throughout the week, Bisexual+ Pride flags lined the medians along Santa Monica Boulevard and flew at West Hollywood City Hall, while the City’s signature lanterns above Santa Monica Boulevard glowed in the colors of the Bi+ Pride flag.
The City also co-sponsored two community events celebrating bi+, pansexual, and queer voices and experiences.
On Saturday, September 19, Rewrite the BiLine brought its Write Us In Summit to the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room for an afternoon focused on bi+ and polyamorous representation in film, television, music, and the arts.
The event featured a live performance by bi+ singer-songwriter Lucy & La Mer and was emceed by advocate, educator, writer, and content creator Rose Montoya. Rewrite the BiLine founder and president Christina Fialho delivered the keynote address, with additional speakers including Patrisse Cullors, Capri Campeau, Aaron Hammersley, and Tracy E. Gilchrist.
The Summit also marked the presentation of Rewrite the BiLine’s inaugural Write Us In Award, celebrating efforts to expand authentic bi+ representation in entertainment and media.
Bi+ Visibility Week continued on Saturday, September 26 with laughter on the Sunset Strip as the Los Angeles Bi+ Task Force and amBi Los Angeles presented the Bi+ Pride Week Comedy Show at Hotel Ziggy. The evening showcased a lineup of bi, pan, and queer comedians including Rob Cohen, Miho Fuji, Luis Galilei, Ever Mainard, Audrey Stewart, Laurie Lynn, and Caleb Zeringue.
Together, the events offered two very different ways to celebrate the breadth of the Bi+ community — one centered on representation and storytelling, and another proving that visibility can also come with a punchline.
Since its incorporation in 1984, West Hollywood has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ equality and visibility. With more than 40 percent of its residents identifying as LGBTQ+, the City has spent more than four decades supporting policies, programs, events, and community partnerships that recognize and celebrate the many identities that make up the LGBTQ+ community.
For Bi+ Visibility Week, West Hollywood made sure the message was visible from the Council Chambers to the Sunset Strip — and in pink, purple, and blue all along the way.
