Pet Mayor Program Celebrates Community, Compassion, Canine Charm, and Feline Follies

Only in WeHo

West Hollywood’s Pet Mayor program celebrates community, compassion, and the City’s deep love for animals.

The City of West Hollywood, known for its progressive values and inclusive spirit, has found yet another heartwarming way to bring the community together while celebrating its deep love for animals: its Pet Mayor program. A uniquely WeHo initiative, the Pet Mayor is not your typical politician. With four paws, a wagging tail (or maybe whiskers or feathers), and a platform built on cuddles and compassion, the Pet Mayor represents the best of what the City stands for: kindness, civic engagement, and advocacy.

The City of West Hollywood and its elected representatives are animal lovers. As a new human Mayor is sworn in, the animal they serve as guardian of is playfully named “Pet Mayor” and is “sworn in” at the City’s Annual Picasso Pets event.  The process is fun, inclusive, and playful — often featuring photos, bios, and campaign “promises” such as “more treats in every bowl” or “daily belly rubs for all.” But beyond the adorable appeal, the program serves a deeper purpose. It raises awareness for animal welfare, supports local shelters and rescue groups, and fosters community engagement around humane issues.

The Pet Mayor acts as a ceremonial ambassador for the City, attending community events like WeHo Pride, Pet Adoption Days, and neighborhood gatherings. While the title is honorary, the symbolism is powerful. By celebrating animals in this joyful, visible way, the City underscores its commitment to animal rights and responsible pet ownership.

A Legacy of Animal Rights Leadership

West Hollywood’s Pet Mayor program is not a gimmick — it’s the latest chapter in a long and proud history of animal rights leadership. Since its incorporation in 1984, West Hollywood has consistently been on the forefront of progressive legislation that protects animals and promotes ethical treatment.

In 1989, West Hollywood passed one of the nation’s first ordinances banning the declawing of cats, recognizing the practice as cruel and unnecessary. This landmark decision helped set a national precedent for feline protection.

And in 2003, the City began officially referring to pet "guardians" rather than "owners," recognizing the deep emotional and ethical bond between people and their animals.

West Hollywood also banned the sale of animals from puppy mills in 2010, mandating that all pets sold in stores must come from shelters or rescue organizations.

In 2011, the City became the first in the United States to ban the sale of fur, making a bold statement in defense of animals used in the fashion industry and encouraging cruelty-free alternatives.

These policies reflect a broader ethos in West Hollywood: that animals are sentient beings deserving of dignity, protection, and compassion. The City has worked closely with advocacy groups to support animal rescue, increase adoption rates, and educate residents about humane practices.

More Than a Title

The Pet Mayor may not pass ordinances or hold press conferences, but their “term in office” is filled with tail wags and good will. They represent the spirit of West Hollywood — inclusive, kind, and proudly quirky. The program reminds residents that political engagement can be joyful, and that community can be built around shared values, no matter how many legs you walk on.

In West Hollywood, even the smallest paws can make a big impact.
