Guests arrived at the already colorful Pacific Design Center as the afternoon sun dipped into a soft golden hue, gathering together for a lively reception filled with conversation, connection, and just the right amount of sparkle. By the time the Rainbow Key Awards ceremony began, the room shimmered — not just with anticipation, but with the collective energy of a community that knows how to rise, shine, and rainbow.
Hosted by the City of West Hollywood and its LGBTQ+ Commission, the annual Rainbow Key Awards honored the 2025 awardees — trailblazers whose work have left indelible marks on the LGBTQ+ community. Each honoree represented a different shade of impact, proving that progress, like a rainbow, is most powerful when all colors are present.
Among the honorees was Cake and Art, a beloved bakery that has been serving sweetness with a side of history since 1976. Long before marriage equality became law, the bakery was baking love into every layer, crafting cakes for same-sex commitment ceremonies and later celebrating legalization with cupcakes for couples rushing to say “I do.” Talk about having your cake — and equality, too.
Fan Girl Cafe, founded by Betsy Martinez and Cynthia Temblador, brews more than coffee, it cultivates community. The cafe space is a cozy, creative haven where queer voices are amplified through poetry, music, and shared experiences. It is a place where connection isn’t just encouraged, it is espresso-ly essential.
Artistic expression took center stage through Abdullah “Abby” Hall, whose leadership of the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles gives voice, literally and figuratively, to trans and gender-expansive individuals. Under Abby’s direction, the chorus doesn’t just perform; it resonates, reminding audiences that authenticity always hits the right note.
Entrepreneur and advocate Tristan Schukraft brings a bold vision to queer spaces, preserving iconic locations such as The Abbey while expanding LGBTQ+ hospitality worldwide. Through his healthcare platform, MISTR, he also helped transform access to HIV prevention and treatment, proving that pride can be both celebratory and lifesaving.
Meanwhile, Trudging Buddies shows that healing and community can go the distance — literally. Through athletic and service-based initiatives, the organization supports hundreds of LGBTQ+ individuals in recovery, raising millions for HIV/AIDS causes and building resilience one mile at a time.
Two additional honors added even more brilliance to the evening. Angela Brinskele received the Melissa Etheridge Award for her decades of activism and documentation of LGBTQ+ life through photography in capturing moments that might otherwise fade, but instead that now shine forever. Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, was awarded the Audre Lorde Activist Award, recognized for expanding life-saving resources for LGBTQ+ youth and ensuring that support is always just a call or text away.
Beyond the applause and accolades, the Rainbow Key Awards carried a deeper resonance. In a time when LGBTQ+ communities across the nation faced renewed challenges, the Rainbow Key Awards stood as more than a celebration — they were a declaration. A bold, unapologetic statement that in West Hollywood, visibility is not optional, it’s foundational.
For more than four decades, the City has championed equality, advocacy, and inclusion, becoming a beacon of progress far beyond its municipal boundaries. With more than 40 percent of its residents identifying as LGBTQ+, West Hollywood doesn’t just fly the rainbow flag, it lives it, breathes it, and continually adds new colors to its legacy.
As the Rainbow Key Awards evening drew to a close, one thing was crystal clear: the Rainbow Key Awards weren’t just honoring the past, they were illuminating the path forward. When a community commits to shining bright, no force can dim that colorful light.
