The City of West Hollywood proudly celebrated Russian-Speaking Community Cultural Heritage Month throughout May 2026, honoring the rich traditions, histories, and contributions of Russian-speaking immigrants and their families.
Since 2001, the City of West Hollywood has recognized Russian-Speaking Community Cultural Heritage Month as an opportunity to celebrate visual arts, performing arts, language, history, and the enduring contributions of Russian-speaking residents.
Programming featured a variety of events highlighting the diversity of a community whose roots span many regions of the former Soviet Union and encompass more than 100 ethnic groups, languages, religious traditions, and cultural experiences.
A highlight was the 25th Annual WeHo Mishka Festival at Plummer Park. Hosted on May 17, 2026 by the City of West Hollywood and its Russian-Speaking Advisory Board, this milestone celebration brought together community members of all ages for a day filled with music, dance, food, art, and storytelling. Festivalgoers enjoyed performances by internationally recognized artists, including legendary entertainer Rustam Shtar and dance music icon Kristine W., alongside a diverse lineup of performers representing a wide range of artistic traditions.
Adding color and creativity to the celebration was the Bridging Through Colors art exhibit, which showcased visual art as a universal language of connection. The exhibit invited visitors to explore themes of culture, identity, and belonging while fostering dialogue across generations and backgrounds.
The month concluded on May 23, 2026 with the 20th Annual Russian-Speaking Community Awards Ceremony and the 9th Annual Classical Night in May Concert. Community leaders, organizations, and initiatives were recognized for their meaningful contributions, followed by an evening of world-class classical music performances that showcased exceptional talent and artistry.
West Hollywood remains home to one of the region’s largest Russian-speaking communities. Many residents established roots in the area after immigrating to the United States in search of opportunity, freedom, and refuge from discrimination and antisemitism. Today, approximately 11 percent of West Hollywood residents trace their ancestry to countries of the former Soviet Union, helping shape the City’s vibrant multicultural identity.
Russian-Speaking Community Cultural Heritage Month offered opportunities for people of all backgrounds to learn, connect, and celebrate together. From the energy and excitement of the WeHo Mishka Festival to the artistry of Classical Night in May, the month’s events highlighted the lasting contributions of the City’s Russian-speaking community and its important role in the cultural fabric of the City of West Hollywood.
