The City of West Hollywood officially launched the 2026 WeHo Pride season in dazzling fashion on May 22, 2026, as community members gathered at West Hollywood Park to celebrate Harvey Milk Day with an evening of pride, pageantry, history, and plenty of sparkle.
Held on the South Lawn at the base of the Grand Staircase of the Aquatic and Recreation Center, the City’s annual Harvey Milk Day celebration honored the life and legacy of one of the nation’s most influential LGBTQ+ civil rights leaders. The free community event welcomed residents, visitors, activists, families, and drag enthusiasts for an unforgettable evening of reflection and celebration.
The highlight of the festivities was the fourth annual José Sarria Drag Pageant, which transformed the park into a runway of glamour, talent, and fierce competition. Hosted by West Hollywood Drag Laureate Pickle, the pageant paid tribute to José Sarria, the legendary drag performer, activist, and trailblazing political candidate who helped pave the way for future LGBTQ+ elected officials, including Harvey Milk.
Contestants brought charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent to the stage, dazzling the crowd with performances that honored both Sarria’s legacy and the vibrant spirit of drag culture. A distinguished panel of judges included Queen Mother Karina Samala and Emperor Eugene Maysky of the Imperial Court, along with former pageant winners Samara Sin and Queen Angelina, all of whom helped crown this year’s standouts.
This year’s event featured a nautical theme inspired by Harvey Milk’s service in the United States Navy and in recognition of ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate his legacy. Maritime costumes and sailor fashions added an extra splash of creativity to the evening.
Beyond the pageant, attendees enjoyed opportunities to register to vote, pose for commemorative Harvey Milk and José Sarria photo opportunities, and enjoy complimentary milk and cookies, a sweet nod to Harvey Milk.
Harvey Milk’s impact was extraordinary. As California’s first openly gay elected official, his courage and advocacy helped transform the LGBTQ+ rights movement and continue to inspire generations of activists. The City of West Hollywood is the first city in the nation to officially observe Harvey Milk Day as a municipal holiday, reaffirming its commitment to preserving and celebrating LGBTQ+ history.
As the sun set over West Hollywood Park and sequins shimmered beneath the evening sky, the City’s Harvey Milk Day celebration offered a joyful and meaningful beginning to the 2026 WeHo Pride season, with a little extra glitter on the horizon.
