Love was in the air—and so were the flags.
This past Valentine’s Day, the City of West Hollywood teamed up with The Lavender Effect and SoCal Flagging to bring a burst of color, movement, and joy to West Hollywood Park with I Love Flagging, a free, all-ages community celebration.
Held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 12 to 4 p.m., the event invited everyone—whether seasoned dancers or just flag-curious—to jump in and join the fun. Attendees enjoyed a lively DJ, a welcoming crowd, and plenty of opportunities to learn the art of flagging (no experience required—and yes, flags were provided).

For the uninitiated, flagging is a dazzling form of expressive dance rooted in LGBTQ+ nightlife culture. It first took off in the late ’70s and early ’80s inside iconic clubs like Studio One right in West Hollywood, where performers used flowing flags to energize the dance floor and elevate the vibe. Decades later, that same spirit remained alive and thriving. Just take a look at the flying colors in this video:
The Lavender Effect—an organization devoted to preserving LGBTQ+ history—helped reintroduce flagging to a new generation during WeHo Pride 2024. Alongside SoCal Flagging, they brought it back just in time for a Valentine’s celebration that was less about candlelit dinners and more about community, creativity, and connection.
