Romance and Comedy Take Center Stage at Kings Road Park

There were no scripts, no guarantees of happily-ever-after, and certainly no way of knowing which romantic entanglements might unfold when the City of West Hollywood welcomed Impro Theatre’s Jane Austen UnScripted to Kings Road Park for the opening weekend of its 2026 Free Theatre in the Parks program.

The outdoor performances kicked off on Saturday, September 12, transforming the leafy neighborhood park into a delightfully unpredictable slice of Regency-era England, complete with romance, misunderstandings, impeccable manners, questionable intentions, and plenty of laughs.

Presented by the City of West Hollywood through its Arts Division, Jane Austen UnScripted takes the familiar world of Jane Austen and throws away the script. Audience suggestions provide the spark, and the performers do the rest, creating an entirely original play in real time. The result is a theatrical high-wire act in which every character, relationship, plot twist, declaration of affection, and social catastrophe is invented on the spot.

Directed by Paul Rogan, the 75-minute production draws inspiration from the wit, romance, social conventions, and wonderfully complicated relationships that have made Austen’s novels enduring favorites. No Austen expertise is required: whether audience members arrived knowing their Pride and Prejudice from their Sense and Sensibility or simply came looking for an entertaining afternoon in the park, the improvised comedy offered plenty to enjoy.

Photos from the September 12 performance captured the playful spirit of the production as performers turned Kings Road Park into their stage and audience members settled in for an afternoon of live theatre outdoors. Free Theatre in the Parks is part of the City of West Hollywood’s ongoing commitment to making arts and cultural programming accessible to the community. The annual program brings professional theatre out of traditional performance spaces and directly into a neighborhood park, offering audiences an opportunity to experience live performance at no cost. For the 2026 program, the City sought a production suitable for audiences of all ages and scheduled a minimum of six weekend performances at Kings Road Park.

And because Jane Austen UnScripted is created anew each time the performers take the stage, seeing it once doesn’t mean you’ve seen the show. New audience suggestions mean new characters, new romances, new scandals, and entirely new stories at every performance.

After all, in the world of Jane Austen — improvised or otherwise — one never knows when a perfectly respectable afternoon in the park might lead to romance, scandal, or a very advantageous match!
