Sunset Boulevard Reopens Following LADWP Water Main Break

City News

Sunset Boulevard is back open, thanks to an extraordinary response from LADWP crews after July's major water main break.

After an extraordinary response by crews from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), Sunset Boulevard has fully reopened following the major LADWP water main break that significantly impacted the Sunset Strip and surrounding neighborhood in mid-July. The reopening marks an important milestone for residents, businesses, visitors, and everyone affected by road closures, limited access, flooding, and the many disruptions caused by the incident.

Throughout the response, the City of West Hollywood worked closely with LADWP and regional partners to support impacted residents and businesses, share timely information, maintain neighborhood access whenever possible, and connect community members with available resources. The City extends its sincere appreciation to everyone for their patience, resilience, and cooperation.

Many West Hollywood residents and businesses continue working with LADWP Claims as they address property damage and other losses resulting from the incident. Information about the LADWP Claims process is available at www.ladwp.com/claims.

Although the emergency repairs and temporary roadway restoration are complete, the work is not yet finished. LADWP crews will return in the coming weeks and months to complete permanent pavement restoration. This work is expected to require intermittent lane closures, and advance notice will be provided to help minimize impacts on the community.

Looking ahead, LADWP has indicated that it is evaluating whether to accelerate its planned 2031 replacement of the aging water transmission line beneath Sunset Boulevard. Accelerating the project could strengthen the long-term reliability of the water system and help reduce the likelihood of similar failures in the future.

As LADWP provides additional updates, the City of West Hollywood will continue to share information with the community.
