Some days call for a sunny patio and brunch. Others call for a drag show, a dance floor, or catching up with friends at a favorite neighborhood spot. In the City of West Hollywood’s Rainbow District, there’s room for all of it – and a new website to help you explore.
The newly launched RainbowDistrictWeHo.com offers community members and visitors a guide to West Hollywood’s Rainbow District, from everyday discoveries to memorable nights out. Stretching along Santa Monica Boulevard between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard, the Rainbow District is a one-mile gathering place where LGBTQ+ community and culture flourish.
For generations, this historic stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard has brought LGBTQ+ people and allies together through nightlife, activism, friendship, and self-expression. The City of West Hollywood’s formal designation of the Rainbow District in 2025 affirmed that legacy and reaffirmed the City’s deep commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ spaces in a neighborhood with significance that reaches far beyond its venues and storefronts.
Those roots reach back long before West Hollywood became a city. During the 1960s and 1970s, this then-unincorporated area of Los Angeles County emerged as a gathering place for LGBTQ+ people, with apartments, bars, shops, and businesses creating spaces for friendship, identity, and organizing.
By the mid-1970s, the western stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard in what would become West Hollywood was widely associated with LGBTQ+ life and became known informally as Boystown. Today, the Rainbow District reflects a more inclusive name for this historic center of LGBTQ+ community and culture.
In 1979, the Christopher Street West “Gay Parade” moved from Hollywood to Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. Five years later, LGBTQ+ activists joined older adults and renters in the successful movement for cityhood. The City of West Hollywood was incorporated on November 29, 1984, with the nation’s first majority openly gay City Council.
Today, West Hollywood’s Rainbow District carries that remarkable history forward as a place where nightlife and celebration continue to exist alongside community-building, advocacy, and belonging.
That spirit comes through at RainbowDistrictWeHo.com. A searchable directory features more than 100 restaurants, bars, shops, and services, making it easy to plan an evening with friends or discover a new neighborhood favorite.
An events calendar highlights nightlife, entertainment, and community celebrations, while a deals section features promotions from participating businesses, including offers for West Hollywood residents through WeHo Loves Locals.
The site also provides practical information about parking, transit, and the City’s free PickUp shuttle. Site visitors can use Queery, the City-developed award-winning AI-powered chat tool, to get answers and build personalized itineraries. A business portal allows local businesses to update listings, hours, promotions, and events.
For longtime locals, the Rainbow District website offers a fresh way to rediscover familiar surroundings. For first-time visitors, it opens the door to a neighborhood built on LGBTQ+ visibility, connection, and belonging.
Follow the rainbow at RainbowDistrictWeHo.com – then gather with your favorite people and experience West Hollywood’s Rainbow District for yourself.
